Star Trek/X-Men: Second Contact | Not Spawn Year Day 58
I did not expect to love and get as invested in this show as I did. Episodes got me tearing up every other one, and episode 5 made me actually cry at the end. I was completely sideswiped with how much I cared. So happy that wolverine was finally put on the sideline and great characters like cyclops, storm, rogue, and magneto along with many others got plenty of time to shine.
(suggestion for any future video similar to this one: consideration for any vegetarian (or vegan) receiver of such a video (example: no using the word "meat" as a metaphor))
Personally, I feel you are being too harsh on Call Dodd. Can he do the same Wolverine voice he did back in the 90's? No. Can he still do a good Wolverine voice in a more general sense. Yes. Considering how hit-and-miss that kind of stuff can be (for comparison, I don't think Mark Hamill has sounded great as the Joker for a decade or so), the returning X-Men cast was overall pretty darn good in their respective roles.
that's fair! i dont really hjave that with hamil, i think Dodd is way more noticeable.
I always read Logan with a deeper voice anyway, closer to Steve Blum or Scott McNeil, so his lower pitch worked for me.
The thicker accent is what made it sillier to me but now I think maybe that's what it always should have sounded like.
It's cool that people got a continuation of 90's X Men that worked. I have no desire see X Men 97. I like the original show and everyone's probably right about the new one being good. I personally don't need any more and am fine with giving it a miss.
So you was just curious what cap would say?
@@gjjijji More or less. I'm pretty burned out on most superhero content that's coming out currently. But I still want to have a general idea on what the overall feedback is.
@thomasmurphy8187 I'd recommend just watching some clips on youtube then. Especially of Magneto's speech in episode 2 and some of the cool fought scenes.
@@itsxtray i think he should just watch episode 2 as a whole because the context makes the scene 10x better
I kind of had the same mindset but the show blew my expectations away. It’s a legitimately great show. Don’t even worry about not having seen the original show.
Nah, that 8 but remix is great but still hurts
Sorry forgot to say this, the reason the mental block thing works for storm’s arc and not Spiderman was because NOTHING physical happened to Spiderman to cause a mental block. If I was a great basketball player and I lost my ability to walk and healed it would take me a while to mentally be able to play again
That’s gotta be in movies too right????
I think it is Ultraman but more so an interpretation that is similar to Superior Man in Red Son were Ultraman is created by Lex / Government to frame Superman but as the movie goes on he degrades into Bizarro.
44:52 i guess he gets that from sarah because i recall in one of the marvel mania commentaries, you said that sarah prefers golden age heroes and that style.
The people wanting star man to appear in the new Superman is likely due to it appearing in memes of people doing upstanding acts with a Superman picture underneath and star man playing. A lot of people are attributing Superman with the star man song now.
Weird. I didn't know about that.
And Gunn said he won’t use it because it’s the most asked song he saw for Guardians. I do think it’s a fitting song for the character. I’d like to see the Carpenters cover of Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft
So cap would you have to watch peacemaker 4 times to get it.
Probably. I'm not going to do that, haha.
Rear window is great. I’m sure you guys will enjoy it.
And I’m lacking on my Hitchcock. I’ve only seen Psycho
@@TheDayGhost If you get the itch, Vertigo is also worth watching. Both it, and rear window star James Stewart.
@@MichaelMcCallister097 I’ve got the House of Hitchcock box set, one day I’m gonna go through it all
@TheDayGhost It’s all about Strangers on a Train for me.
@@Geekvolution that’s one I’m excited to see. My grandma is also permanently traumatized by The Birds so even if it doesn’t hold up like I’ve heard I’m excited to see that
You could do a virtual wheel of all the shows you’ve haven’t covered like Stargirl, Hitmonkey, etc. And spin it every stream to sample the pilot.
Time to make a list... I bet there are 20 of them
Glad to hear you’re watching My Adventures with Superman, because the most recent episodes are KILLER!
What was the point of David taking all those steroids if you’re just going to put him in a suit that hides his physique?
Keep in mind that at the time Oxford and Cambridge have been, not even infiltrated , but actually being proselytized by the communists.
The book is very dense but more thorough. But I highly recommend the miniseries with Alec Guinness because you really get the nitty-gritty of the time period and a real sense of what the cold war was about
Even giving the "tv-budget" leeway, The Caped Crusader does not IMO look stylized enough for the tone and genre they are going for. Basically looks the same as most of DC's direct-to-video movies, most of which I wouldn't call anything visually memorable.
Im expecting a full on commentary with this movie having corenswet superman fight an edgy brooding superman clone of himself
My prediction is if that guy in the suit is a clone of Superman he’ll start looking exactly the same but will degrade to be their Bizarro by the end. I also think Gunn could either be going for Superman beating the dark edgy Superman or he could end up redeeming him as he’s inspired by real Superman.
@@TheDayGhost would love that. I assume the superman clone will be the leader of this authority
@@overlord6993 that’s possible. It’s hard to say what’s going on with The Authority. Seems like it’s just The Engineer and I think Rick Flag is probably just in that arrest scene but who knows. Cap also missed the most important set photos of Mr Terrific at a pet store talking to nothing with a box of dog treats which probably confirms the most obvious inclusion of a Gunn Superman movie
@@TheDayGhostI didn't see that one anywhere
@@Geekvolution yeah and I didn’t send that stuff to you because I figured it was too spoilery
Ok. Gunn got the visual aesthetics right. But that is meaningless if the good writing isn't there to back it up. And he hasn't proven that he has the range to tackle someone like Superman yet. We'll see when the final product comes out. I don’t have that blind trust as I’m not as into his superhero contributions. Don't like his Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. And the Guardians movies, while having good elements, are overrated, peaking with the first one. I'll be watching through MCU again in July, so maybe my perspective will change. Unlikely. Caped Crusader was just a load of “Who cares?” The Golden Age period setting is mildly interesting but still overall typical Batman stuff with some cosmetic changes.
How is Sherlock Holmes a superhero movie?
The Downey movies are leaning into the genre so we make an exception for it.
I don’t think zorro is a superhero either 😂
@@MichaelMcCallister097 I’d buy zorro before Sherlock. At least he wears a costume to protect his identity when he fights criminals
All the strong contrast between bright light and almost pitch black shadows made this movie like a Neil Adams drawing come to light(when correctly inked). I love everything else as well. I believe there will never be as good a Batman movie ever even if you get Burton or Keaton back together. They did that in Batman Returns and it is not even half as good.
I also have no clue what Austin is talking about with the identity of the Hobgoblin being leaked. That isn’t even anything close to what happened at any point at all. Roger Stern left and didn’t tell anybody that it was supposed to be Kingsley. How the heck would it have been leaked? He doesn’t know what he is talking about for someone complaining so much about accuracy.
It’s just been awhile so I misremembered. My bad
Armageddon 2001 is a crappy DC event that got ruined because the identity of the villain was leaked and they scrambled to change it. Maybe you were thinking of that.
@@greggoat6570 that’s possible yeah. Sometimes it’s easy to conflate things
With how convoluted the history of the hob goblins identity is can you really blame him?
Fair enough, I had a fanboy moment. I will do better.
If anyone other than Cap straight up said they disliked the book because they thought it was going to be Injustice Spidey, I would have just shut off the review immediately, I will put it that way. Sorry for the harshness but I really can’t blame anybody that was turned off by that.
I don’t know, finishing the video and ruminating on it a bit, I feel like there is a lot of bad faith criticism in this review. I have heard Cap say so many times “not to rewrite x y or z, but”, yet so much of this review is just “well I had this idea and I liked my idea more” or “I thought it was going in this direction so book bad” I also thought Austin had stated he hasn’t read any 80’s Spider-Man before? Strange he was so concerned about “how it branched off”, or whatever. As someone who has read 90% of that stuff I thought it was a really cool love letter to that period in Marvel. It is strange that you guys are simultaneously wrapped up in things like sliding time scales etc but don’t consider if it is at all maybe more in with comics of the time to an extent. Cool to hear you talk about it, but the bad faith criticism was kind of disappointing.
I’ve read a lot of 80s Spider-Man. Haven’t read that stuff in awhile but you must be mixing something up if you thought I said that
Okay fair enough sorry, if I’m wrong then I’m wrong. It is cool that you have read some of that stuff! DeFalco and Stern are great. I must be thinking about something else. My fault, sorry.
@@greggoat6570 it’s all good dude. I don’t expect people to remember everything about me like that. One of the first trades I remember getting as a kid was all the black suit saga. I read it over and over
I got one of those trades as a teen, similar experience. On a positive note I finally ordered the first volume of Ostrander Suicide Squad per your recommendation. His Star Wars stuff is great so I’m excited.
@@greggoat6570 oh heck yeah man, I hope you like it. That’s such a good run
1:42 I am pretty sure that the nanny scene is set up for supporting evidence for the 3rd act confrontation between Rafeal and De la Vega where he tries to force him to confess to la Vega's daughter what he did and Rafeal tries to play him off as a mad man, but certain things make Elena know that Rafael is lying like calling de la vega by name which is what the nanny told her her real father name was and that Vega knew the flowers the old nanny said her mother placed over her crib as a baby. The nanny scene is necessary to give her information to tip her off that Rafeal is lying to her in that confrontation.
I think Cap often reads far too much into violence and especially its use in comics and especially modern comics. I really don’t buy into the idea that a writer is literally sitting there thinking “man this is going be so edgy and cool people will have to like it”. I just think sometimes a story with a darker tone treats violence harsher and as less of a vehicle for escapism.
Interesting review, glad to hear your thoughts on this. A few minor notes: - I would argue White Knight is not precisely the same as those other comics that are being “milked” since SGM in part opens the door for sequels and he then actually recontextualized the story as a trilogy with each series representing either the past present or future of Gotham. -That is volume 2 or of What-If that has the Battleworld symbiote issue. It has some early Bagley art.
Absolutely loved the cartoon and Patrick Warburton was "The Tick". His build, his voice and the smarmy lunacy portrayed were perfect for the character. The one problem was that there were never actual physical fights.
I just bought the Moonwalker Blu-ray (essentially as a freebie thrown in with Stop Making Sense), so the timing is absolutely uncanny. I have no idea if the YT upload is the same censored copy as the BD, so that might potentially be an issue if it's later taken down.
Oh dang I didn’t know there was a censored version
@@TheDayGhost Yeah, they removed the bit of Joe Pesci threatening the little girl with a needle, losing about 15 seconds. Since all HD copies are supposedly the same, there probably won't be sync issues, but I imagine the runtime will be important to look at, just to be sure.
@@HunterTechTen that’s so weird. I’ll look into it before we do it. Thanks for letting me know.
Austin made my day with his comment about the runner up in the Kentucky Derby Sarah Jessica Parker.
🤣
I have read a comedy manga that does the poly relation with 5 characters
surprised how low Darksied and Slade are like really Posion Ivy is apparently way more popular?
I hope Power Girl or Batwoman make the list, I doubt they will but it be nice
Spoilers: You got one of those
I was kind of hoping Plastic Man would be on the list. Like, in the 40-50 range.
Shazam/Captain Marvel has become one of my favourite DC characters so it was cool for him to get as high as he did.
Kingdom Come gave him a lot of respect.
At the risk of seeming like Batman carries DC, where are Penguin, Riddler and the other Batman villains?
ASBAR seems like the funniest Batman story ever.
No desire to see The Penguin after having just watched The Batman for the second time since it first came out. I don't get the love for it. To me this came off like the most uninspired take since the 2017 Lego Batman film. Objectively speaking there's not much wrong with the Matt Reeves movie. It's competently made. But this recent viewing really hit home why I can't connect with it. Over the past 20 years we've really ramped up the exposure of Batman on screen across film, tv, animation and live action. Even gaming if you want to throw in stuff like Tell Tale and Arkham. And because of that overexposure it's getting increasingly harder to make something that comes off as inspired and unique. More and more it comes off like we're just making glorified greatest hits collections with the ideas, covered up by well put together style. And that very much applies to the Reeves film. It felt so been there done that. Right now it feels like Batman has been played out on screen and there's nothing left to do with him. Maybe someone can come along and breathe some new life into the material eventually. But at the moment the character/universe needs some time away.

1:18:01 u may get your wish dan.
Please continue watching, I'd love to hear your thoughts as the show goes on, especially s2!
Please do a comic vault on Nexus!
All the score discussion is so funny, because Twister has become something of a cult favorite for those in film music fan communities. And if it sounds like so much other stuff, it's because Mancina is a part of Zimmer's music company, so it's basically part of a house sound.
Unrelated, but I recently watched the Kurt Russell movie Breakdown for the first time. Now that's an awesome 90s movie.
17:10 So GTAV 😂
Without spoling anything for later, this show has such an interesting take on the TV anti-hero archetype. Bill Hader himself views Barry as an idiot which is kind of funny.
Supremely eye roll inducing
